Help! Does my child have autism?

September 22, 2009

Hello all! My name is Brenda. I am 36 and have a 4-year-old son named Sean.

Little Sean just started his first year of preschool a few weeks ago.  I have been called in by the teacher several times already because Sean has been acting out.  She says that he does not pay attention to her when she calls his name.  For example, she repeated four or five times before he finally looked up from his coloring.  When she asked him to stop and clean up he refused.  He is also having difficulty getting along with the other children.  Sean has always been a quiet child; he never talked much- even to Mark (his father/my husband) or myself. His isolation has worsened since he’s gotten to school. If another child, or even the teacher, touches his shoulders he freaks out.  He screams and flails his arms.

Being a new mother, I am not sure what to do about all of this.  It really concerns because I love Sean and want him to be happy. At first I thought he just had problems paying attention, but his actions have worsened since he entered preschool. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I want to help my son the best I can.

Hello world!
